Large Smoke Fired Pot (B)

Artist / Maker: Martine Becquet

Large smoke fired vessel. This piece has been made in collaboration with textile artist Rachael Singleton.

Martine is a maker originally from Belgium, learning her craft in Holland but now living and working in the Lake District.

Martine has recently started to collaborate with textile artist, Rachael Singleton. The addition of textiles to these pieces are unusual and striking. The design on this vessel uses colours reminiscent of bluebell woods with the addition of cottons and foraged twigs.

“I hand throw each piece on the wheel. When the clay is leather hard (i.e. not completely dry)

I burnish the pots, sometimes using a pebble, to make the pots smooth and shiny.

After bisque firing the pieces up to 1000°C, I then fire them in wood and sawdust with salt, oxides, etc. to create special effects.”
